Title: Okanagan Fountain
Details: Handglaze ceramic tiles - clay and glazes - 10ft.Wx12ft.Dx4ft.H - 2017

Created in 2017 for a Kelowna family missing the colours of California architecture.  This is another of those cases where the artist was given the freedom to create… Inspired by Californian-Spanish designs and our surrounding in the Okanagan, this garden fountain is an statement to nature. Because all the different wave mural covering the three cylindrical shapes of the fountain, I started with a simple maquette to understand the curvature and joinery of the different section for seamless installation. Considering the Canadian winters, the tiles are frost proof, cut in the different wavy shapes, glazed and re-fired. We install our own projects, so we can take care of the final details.

  • Design & production done by Carolina Sánchez de Bustamante

What an inspiration was to work in this amazing project, with such fabulous clients… so grateful at the opportunity.

Working on the different panels at Ashpa Naira Studio, my studio on the west side of Okanagan Lake.

Installing the lower fountain border with tile-installer Brian Chard, a really skillful tile installer with an artistic eye… and great to work with.

Installing with Brian Chard the bigger ceramic waterfall.

Another view of the fountain surrounding by a beautifully design Japanese garden by Ken Savail from KHS Landscape. The white wall treatment is Micro-topping done by Gerry Monty from ClayMasters.

Another image of the actual waterfalls, there are three within the project.

More waterfalls in view.

Detail example of a seamless corner… Walking around this fountain which features the colours of the lakes in the Okanagan, the viewer will see a continues design on the outside perimeter as within the intersection of the three cylindrical fountains… Attention to detail.

A line of smaller tiles in the top facade of the home, following architectural elements of Art-Deco in Miami buildings.
